Classification of throwing techniques
The different methods of throwing an opponent are divided into two broad categories; tachi waza (standing techniques) and sutemi waza (sacrifice techniches).
Tachi waza are further classified as te waza (hand techniques), koshi waza (hip techniques), and ashi waza (foot techniques), while sutemi waza are either ma sutemi waza (supine sacrifice techniques) or yoko sutemi waza (side sacrifice techniques).
The techniques below include all the techniques of the Gokyo, as well as shimmeisho no waza, which are additional techniques which have been recognised since 1920.
